Runa Laila was born in Rajshahi, Bangladesh. Her father was
from Hyderabad, India. Her early music training was done when her family lived
in Karachi Federeal B area in 1960 on wards by Ustad Qader later known as Piya
Rang. She was a popular singer in Pakistan in sixties and early seventies. In
1974 she shifted to bombay and sang some beautiful songs. Some of the music
directors she has worked with are Jaidev, Kalyanji Anandji, Bhappi Lahiri. She
is equally popular in the Bengali pop music space with songs like "Sadher Lau
Banailo Morey" and "Bondhu Tin Din Tor Barite Gelam". Runa has sung in seventeen
languages -.besides her native Bengali, she is also proficient in Urdu, Hindi,
Punjabi, Sindi, Gujrati, Pashtu, Baluchi, Arabic, Persian, Malay, Nepalese,
Japanese, Italian, Spanish, French and of course in the English language. Runa
Laila has also earned wide fame for her stage and TV performances, especially in
Pakistan, where Runa Laila is considered their own. She has been immensely
popular with film goers due to her play-back singing. She has had her own
television series fortnightly in Pakistan called Bazme-Laila.
Runa has been
married twice, most recently in 2006 to the Bangladeshi film actor, Alamgir.
